“An engaged institution is responsive to the needs of today’s students and tomorrow’s. It enriches the student experience by bringing research into the curriculum and offering practical experience in the world they will enter. It forms partnerships of faculty, students and communities to put knowledge and skills to work on today’s most critical problems.” – Returning to Our Roots: The Engaged Institution, Kellogg Commission Report, 1999“
… [T]he academy must become a more vigorous partner in the search for answers to our most pressing social, civic, economic, and moral problems, and must affirm its historic commitment to what I call the scholarship of engagement.” – The Scholarship of Engagement Ernest L. Boyer, Ph.D. Former President The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
“Community engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.
The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.” – Carnegie Community Engagement Classification definition of Community Engagement
NCCE seeks to strengthen and deepen engaged teaching and scholarship, as well as the scholarship of engagement, at our member institutions. We think of engaged teaching and scholarship as the practices and pedagogies that connect learning and research with public issues and purposes. We think of the scholarship of engagement as the study and dissemination of ideas and knowledge to improve these practices and pedagogies. We continue to develop initiatives and resources to support this effort.
